SALTYFIREBUFF©
A 24-year visual archive documenting firefighters, apparatus, and emergency responses across the Ohio Valley region of Wheeling, WV.
From the late 1990s through the 2020s, thousands of photographs and incident recordings were captured while documenting IAFF firefighters and regional fire departments.
This project preserves those materials as a structured digital archive for historical research and public access.
Archival Features
Stories from the Archive
A scene from a working garage fire on School Ave. in Elm Grove. Firefighters had multiple working fires this day. Stories like this make up the historical archival media collection.
Historical Apparatus Spotlight
1994 Sutphen Engine 10 and 1983 Sutphen Ladder 1. Two unique, historical pieces of fire apparatus from Wheeling Fire Dept. history. These two rigs served as Engine 10 from 1994 to 2012 and from Ladder 1 from 1983 to 2007. Ladder 1 became Ladder 6 and served another decade before being scrapped.
Founding Years in Pittsburgh, PA
From 2008 to 2011, I was a fire scene photographer or “fire buff” in the City of Pittsburgh. I followed IAFF Local 1 “Pittsburgh Firefighters” in the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire. This is 14 Truck “Oakland”. The main truck company and fire company in Oakland. The other Oakland company is 10 Engine in the “Upper Hill District”.
